Teams and Positions

If you want to know about football then you need to know the three types of teams on the whole team, and also the positions on the team.

The Three Teams:

The three different teams refers to what part of the game is happening. The three teams are Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Offense whole goal is to score the ball, while the defense is trying to stop the Offense. That's the obvious part, but the special teams is a little bit harder to understand. There are four special team opportunities; the punt team, the punt return team, the kick off team, and kick return team. During special teams there is  no offense or defense on the field, but instead there are random players from the whole team who specialize in a area to help the special teams. On special teams, one team is trying to kick the ball to the other team (the other team is trying to catch the kick and score). The intention of the kickoff  or punt team is to keep the other team far away from their own end-zone, and the kick or punt return team tries to score or get the ball or get the ball as far as possible.

Positions

           Offense

  • Quarterback (QB): The most recognizable player is the QB. The Quarter back throws the ball, hands the ball off, and more importantly the QB runs the office by calling plays and making audibles (adjustments).
  • Running Backs (RB's): RB's run the ball by receiving a hand-off, pitch, or pass. They normally get hand offs and run through or around the linemen to try to get as many yards as possible.
  • Offensive Linemen: Offensive line men are the big guys who line up side by side in front of the QB. Their job is to protect and block for the QB or make lanes so the RB's can get through. There are various positions on the offensive line: 2 Guards, 2 Tackles and 1 Center. (There is one guard and one tackle on each side of the center)/
  • Tight Ends (TE's): Tight ends line up on the line of scrimmage like a linemen, except they are able to block, or go out and catch a pass from the QB.
  • Wide Receivers (WR's): Wide receivers line up outside the linemen either off or on the ball, and their job is to run routs to catch passes from the QB or also to block.

          Defense

  • Defensive Linemen: The job of a Defensive linemen is to try to sack the QB, and stop the RB's from getting far. There are various positions on the D-Line: 2 Defensive Ends (DE's), and 2 Defensive Tackles (DT's).
  • Linebacker's (LB's): LB's are at the center of the defense, and their jobs are to stop the run, defend the pass and keep the other team from scoring. There are two types of LB's: The Middle Linebacker (MLB) and the Outside Linebacker (OLB).
  • Defensive Backs (DB's): Defensive backs have various jobs to do on the field depending on what DB position they play. There are Corner Backs (CB's) who guard the receivers and try to stop them from catching the ball. If not guarding a receiver, a CB is most likely guarding a zone on the field, which means they have a section of field that they have to protect. The other DB position is the Safety (S), the Safety is most likely responsible for a zone, and sometimes they have to guard a receiver, running back, or tight end.

         Special Teams

  • Kicker (K): Kicks the ball on Kickoff and also kicks field goals.
  • Punter (P): Punts the ball to the other team.
  • Kick Returner (KR): Returns kicks from kickoff.
  • Punt Returner (PR): Returns punts.

  1. What exactly is the difference between a punter and a kicker? Don't they pretty much do the same job?

    1. Yes both kickers and punters have similar jobs, which is to kick to the other teams. But physically to punt and kick are two different things. On kick off, the kicker kicks the ball off of a tee and also there isn't really a rush because they don't have to worry about the defense trying to block it. On the other hand, during punts, a punter has to catch the ball after it is snapped, then has to try to kick the ball before the defense blocks it.
